Intermediate trumpets-what are they?
Intermediate trumpets, or step up trumpets, are beginner instruments that have some features taken from professional trumpets. In some cases, they are just beginner trumpets that are silver plated. While the plating looks nice and lasts much longer than lacquer, it doesn’t do much for the playing qualities of the instruments.
Some of the intermediate trumpets are a mix of parts from beginner trumpets and professional trumpets. Intermediate trumpets are a good idea when there is pressure from other students or band directors to get a better instrument when finances are short.
Buy now or later?
Usually, I recommend students wait until they can afford a full professional trumpet, but there are times when intermediate trumpets make sense. Sometimes, just having a brand new silver trumpet is enough to motivate students to start working harder in band.
I’ve seen this be a huge motivator at times…sometimes enough of a motivator to completely change their attitude about band. If the rest of the trumpet section has silver horns, a beginner trumpet can make a student feel as if they don’t belong. This is where the intermediate trumpet fits in. If you are not ready to spend the money for a professional trumpet, but you want a silver trumpet, this could be a good choice.
